1. What if I miss my lesson?

There is a no missed lesson policy for both teacher and student. In the event of cancellation due to illness, a lesson can be ‘made up’ within a week of that cancelled session, time permitting. After that time, the lesson is forfeited by the student or refunded to the student if teacher absence has occurred.

2. Do you teach viola?

Yes, it is very useful for all violinists be able to play viola. In addition to increased reading and technical skills, it makes the violin seem much easier.

3. What age students do you teach?

At the present, 6 to 75! All ages can learn to play and enjoy the violin.

4. Is it too late for me to learn the violin?

It is never too late to learn. Adults are fast learners if they can find the time to practice in their busy schedules.

5. I’m left-handed, can I play violin?

Yes you can, it makes no difference.

6. What equipment do I need?

You will need a violin, bow, rosin and case, and usually a violin shoulder rest. You’ll also need a music stand. You can access an online tuner and a metronome to keep time as you play or you can purchase these at a music store. To learn about computer connectivity, visit our How To Connect page.

7. What style violin do you teach?

I teach classical violin technique which can be applied to all different styles and levels of playing.

8. How can I rent/buy an instrument?

There are highly reputable online resources for rental and purchase of instruments to be considered. For more information, please ask.

9. How often do we meet and how long should my lesson be?

Weekly lessons are recommended. With the exception of professional consultations, lessons are prepaid in blocks of four sessions. Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes in length.

10. How much do I need to practice?

Practice time usually depends on the length of the lesson. If one takes a weekly hour lesson then one usually practices an hour daily, etc.

11. Do I need books?

You will need to purchase some music depending on your level of playing and area of focus. All individual exercises will be emailed to you as needed without charge.

12. How do I see my past lessons?

Recording on both MAC and WINDOWS is free. If you are using Skype on a MAC you can download Call Recorder. The recording function is included in iChat. WINDOWS users have a number of recorder choices.

13. How much are lessons?

Tuition is $40 USD per half hour of instruction. Our first meeting will be to check sound, discuss recording procedures and your individual goals. This meeting is free of charge and will last about 40 minutes. If there is financial difficulty, there may be limited scholarships available. Please ask.

14. What do I need for a webcam lesson?

All you need is a computer, a broadband connection to the internet, a webcam and a microphone. To make sure you experience ViolinSync in the best possible way, please check if your computer meets the system requirements proposed by the software providers listed under ‘How to Connect’.

15. How do I pay for the lessons?

Tuition is paid in advance by PayPal or Credit Card and is due in full before your first lesson or by the end of the last pre-paid session. (All transactions are through PayPal, but you do not need to be a member of PayPal to pay via Credit Card.)

16. Can I ask questions about my lesson?
Tuition includes 24/7 email service where the student can ask a question related to the last lesson. There is a guaranteed response within 24 hours. Please post other questions to the ‘Community’ section of this website.
